Habitat Gardens Are Victory Gardens

Yep, we’re going live, folks. This Saturday at 9:30 am, join me, David Newsom (Wild Yards Project) at Plant Material nursery for an Instagram Live Stream  event, “Habitat Gardens are Victory Gardens”

With the exquisite resources of this brilliant little nursery here in Northeast LA, we’ll launch a lively discussion about how you can create vital habitat for countless plant and animal species in your yard while you sequester carbon, lower your resource Impact, increase the yield of your edible gardens and transform the future. And if that’s not enough, we’ll even be serving mimosas! Well...I’ll be drinking them, and I encourage you to join me. On line, of course.

This is big, people. BIG! Come and get a rare, hands-on opportunity to learn from one of our most talented educators about the plants of our very own Mediterranean Chaparral and help create a model community garden in the same day. WYP, teamed up with cultural educator and native-plantsman, Nicholas Hummingbird, will be conducting a native plant workshop in the morning, and leading a massive planting project in the afternoon.

This would not be possible without your donations:

Part One: Lessons from A Master - A morning conversation with Nick about the plants intended for the new WYP Demonstration Garden at Eagle Rock Presbyterian Church in Eagle Rock Los Angeles. With over 20 different species of native plants on hand, Nick and WYP will offer insight into why working with native plants is the key to creating vital habitat for the tens of thousands of birds, bees butterflies and other species endemic to our ecosystems, while offering clear, simple tools to help you get started.
Part Two: A Community Habitat is Born - After a brief coffee/snack break, the WYP team, alongside Nick, will plant a 9000 square foot, native-plant demonstration garden, right along Eagle Rock Blvd. VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED. In exchange for helping create a stunning, habitat garden, you get firsthand knowledge about how to plant native plants, which plants are happy in which conditions, and how to water and maintain young plants over those key, first few years.
